Making Soup
Jack was in a soup making mood yesterday. He put his first attempt (some sort of vegetable and tuna chowder) on the stove and we both forgot it about. I was in a room where the burning smell didn’t reach and Jack was downstairs. The pot was a mess, but I have manage to clean it using a trick my grandmother taught me: boiling water in the charred pot with a lot of baking soda in it. This loosens the burned gunk so you can get it off without a chisel. I’ve save a lot of pots over the years with this method, since Jack and I are both easily distracted. Curious, I looked up the chemical explanation using Google.
Since I don’t really care for vegetable and tuna chowder, I suggested he make potato soup for his second attempt and we found this recipe for Creamy Potato Soup. It was excellent.
Upholstered in Snow
We received a little snow last night.
The space heaters are doing a good job of keeping the house livable, despite an overnight low of 14 degrees Fahrenheit. If the furnace company receives the parts for our furnace this morning, they plan to repair our furnace this afternoon. It will be nice to have central heat again.
Keeping the Home Fires Burning….
unfortunately.
Saturday, Jack noted that cold air was blowing from the registers. He was able to arrange for a service call from the company from which we bought the furnace that morning, which resulted in the news that if we were lucky, they wouldn’t have to replace our whole furnace. As this is a relatively young furnace, bought seven years ago, we were quite bummed about it. Evidently, condensation had gotten into the works, and rusted out two major components. Our warranty was on shaky ground because we hadn’t been having yearly service calls that might have picked up the problem. The guy got the furnace working again with the warning that it was a temporary fix, but the furnace shut down again that evening.

The Comfy Chair
Jack came up this idea for my Christmas present and I agreed it was a good idea. (We usually check out non-trivial gifts with each other, since we would rather get something the other person really wants rather than a surprise. One year, I did manage to surprise Jack with a set of Calphalon pots and pans, but I had told him that I didn’t think they were a good idea when he said he wanted them.) I went to Office Max a few days ago and did some tests. Today, when I came home from the barn, my present was in the sitting room with a red table cloth draped over it. I immediately replaced the old wooden chair I have been using as a computer chair for years now.
I can’t believe how comfortable it is.
Christmas tree
For the first time, we are using all white lights on our tree. I am surprised how much brighter it looks. This photo was taken without a flash in a dark room.

Ed Book’s Journal
I’ve been admiring the photos on Ed Book’s Journal for some time, and now I have even more of a reason to do so. He is publishing some photos taken here in Colorado Springs.
Conestoga Street WordPress Theme
One of the new features of WordPress under 1.3 is a theme manager, so I’ve switched to using a theme by Sonny Parlin called Conestoga Street.
Spam Karma
When I installed the alpha version of WordPress 1.3 for Five Acres, I broke plugin processing. Among other things, this meant that the plugins I was using to control comment spam stopped working. Fortunately, WordPress 1.3 allows you to delete comment spam a lot more easily than did WordPress 1.2.
Yesterday, I wasn’t feeling very well, so I spent some time getting plugins to work on my weblog again. Once I did, I installed Spam Karma, about which I had read good things. It is working flawlessly for me, and I am gloating over the number of spams it has killed.
