Australian Aftermath
Eric Lindsay and Jean Weber are SF fans and friends that we visited in Queensland in 1999. Eric is a devoted diarist and has finally updated his blog about Cyclone Yasi and its aftermath at Eric Lindsay’s Blog February 2011. It looks as though he was waiting for the restoration of his ADSL to do so.

I’ve uploaded some of the photos that I took at COSine, including this one of our chair, Mary Morman.

COSine Science Fiction Convention
The eight annual COSine Science Fiction Convention is being held this week-end at the Crown Plaza Colorado Springs. Our guest of honor is Sharon Shinn. I am running a game of Dominion on Saturday and am also on two panels, one of which is the obligatory Heinlein panel. (I was on a Heinlein panel at the most recent Worldcon in Denver. Someone in the audience said it was the best panel at the convention. I suppose that was flattering, but I wanted to say “You don’t get out much, do you?”) Jack is on a panel Friday night about Science Fiction and Anime. That should be worth attending if only to hear Connie Willis’s views on the topic.
In other fannish news, the Atlantis Hotel room block in Reno for the World SF Convention this summer sold out within 24 hours. (The con is investigating getting another block of rooms.) I am so glad that my great desire to be in the party hotel for once led me to book the room within the first hour.
Doctor Who Cheat Sheet
PBS provides a cheat sheet for the Doctor: Doctor Who: 47 Years Through Time and Space.
Oooppps!
Jack went over to pick up our registration packets yesterday and found that I wasn’t pre-registered. Usually we register two years in advance, converting after site selection, but we didn’t go to Japan two years ago. (At the door is considerably more expensive than pre-registering.) I don’t vote for the Hugos, so I didn’t notice my lapse then. Jack posted a query to the Anticipation LiveJournal community asking if anyone had a membership for sale. Within two hours, a person offered to give me one, declining payment, and sent the necessary information to transfer the membership to me. We downloaded the letter to a USB drive and took it to registration this morning. Since I was already in the database due to other Worldcons, it took about two minutes to do the transfer.
Denvention 3
I just realized that Denvention 3 is the first World Con held in our home state in twenty five years. The last one was Constellation, held in Baltimore in 1983, when Maryland was our home state.
Gazette Article about the Denver Worldcon
Our local newspaper has an article about the Denver Worldcon next month: Sci-fi writers, fans gear up for Worldcon.
Good News
I’ve had more good news to add to being offered a job this week and meeting an old friend for the first time.
The young woman leasing Hap took him to a two-phase (dressage and cross country) and took sixth! Considering she is still in the process of figuring out how to put Hap (who isn’t easy) on the bit their dressage scores weren’t great, but they evidently cleaned up on cross-country. She has been working very hard with Hap, and I am glad to hear that they evidently had a blast on the cross-country course. This was particularly admirable because she had never schooled Hap over these jumps.
I had a great lesson on Lily this morning with my trainer. We have a dressage arena set up temporarily, so I worked on practice tests. She seemed to enjoy the change from our regular routine. Then I went out and found a comfortable swim suit, which was far more surprising then Lily’s excellence on the flat.
And finally, in connection with the World Science Fiction Convention to be held in Denver next year, I found out something this afternoon which pleased me very much. I don’t feel I should mention it yet, but I am so chuffed.
