I first heard about Balto from a Lassie episode. In the 1958 Christmas story, Lassie is hit by a car while pushing a little girl out of the way of the vehicle. A local reporter comes to the vet’s office hoping to get a little human interest story, and while they are waiting for Lassie’s X-rays to be developed, Mr. Bronson begins: “Say, Timmy, did you ever hear a story about a dog named Balto? There’s a big statue of him in Central Park, in New York City.”
