I’ve had more blossoms off this day-lily plant this year than in previous years. I used to think the ruffly effect meant that the bloom had been damaged in the bud, but now think it may be a the way it is supposed to be. Anyone know?

FWIW, there are day-lilies for which that is the way the bloom is supposed to look. I’ve got some in orange in my front yard. I’ll try to get pictures up later this week.
This looks like it’s one of a family of daylilies that mostly are ruffled at the edges. See http://brecks.com/product.asp?pn=76615 for examples of others.
I have a “store-bought” daylily similar to yours which is called “Mardi Gras Parade”. And yes, ruffles are fairly common. Mine seems to prefer more water and it sure got it this year – hence all the blooms.
