Then I noticed that the time of sunset on the solstice is not the earliest\u00a0 amongst the days nearby. And the time of sunrise is not the latest. Indeed, looking over the various sunrise and sunset times, it turns out that the earliest sunset was in the period of December 3-10 &#8211; 16:37\u00a0 in Colorado Springs &#8211; and the latest sunrise occurs from December 31 &#8211; January 10 &#8211; 7:18. But the Solstice is still the shortest day, longest night of the year. (9:26, 14:34\u00a0hrs). Most peculiar, one would intuitively think that the shortest day would have the latest sunrise and the earliest sunset.\u00a0 Something was wrong and I needed to find out.\u00a0 So I went to Google. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that others have noticed this phenomenon before and have an explanation of it. I like <a href=\"http:\/\/larry.denenberg.com\/earliest-sunset.html\">this explanation<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; he said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.analemma.com\/\">analemma<\/a>. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usno.navy.mil\/USNO\/astronomical-applications\/astronomical-information-center\/dark-days\">US Naval Observatory <\/a>was not quite as detailed but did summarize it nicely- <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Declination\">Declination<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Equation_of_time\">The Equation of Time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I still have a hard time visualizing the spacial relationships. What\u00a0I need is a <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mac.com\/sherm39\/iWeb\/Site\/analemma1.html\">picture<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.mac.com\/sherm39\/iWeb\/Site\/analemma1_files\/earliest-sunsets.jpg\">no<\/a>&#8230;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.mac.com\/sherm39\/iWeb\/Site\/analemma1_files\/latest%20_sunrise-2.jpg\">no<\/a>&#8230;\u00a0 doesn&#8217;t help&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was looking at my calendar and noticed that the Winter Solstice is coming up Dec 21.
