{"id":430,"date":"2006-08-16T13:50:13","date_gmt":"2006-08-16T20:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stardel.com\/eg\/?p=430"},"modified":"2006-08-16T13:50:13","modified_gmt":"2006-08-16T20:50:13","slug":"redefining-planets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stardel.com\/eg\/2006\/08\/redefining-planets\/","title":{"rendered":"Redefining Planets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have been hearing about this <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2006_redefinition_of_planet\">redefinition process going on with the IAU<\/a> and the basic definition of planet sounds good to me.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cA planet is a celestial body that (a) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a <a title=\"Hydrostatic equilibrium\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrostatic_equilibrium\">hydrostatic equilibrium<\/a> (nearly round) shape, and (b) is in orbit around a star, and is neither a star nor a satellite of a planet.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not that I get a vote on it. But, I would suggest one additional qualification. That the celestial body have a mean radius greater than 2000 km.  Eventually, gravity will let all aggregates form into spherical shapes. For a planet, size matters as well.<\/p>\n<p>For those bodies that have a mean radius of  500-2000 km, let them be called plutons, or minor planets, or something similar.<\/p>\n<p>Let bodies with a mean radius of less than 500 km be asteroids or space junk or dark matter.
