It shows up in the \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/omb\/budget\/Overview\">federal budge<\/a>t under the &#8220;Mandatory Programs&#8221; section &#8211; its value somewhere between Social Security and Medicare. The 2012 budget allocates $598B for the other\u00a0mandatory\u00a0programs. But I googled for a while and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/ftpdocs\/108xx\/doc10871\/AppendixF.shtml\">found<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 15px; line-height: normal;\">Other categories of mandatory spending:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Unemployment compensation<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/ssi\/\">Supplemental Security Income<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/snap\/\">Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program<\/a> (SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps.)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Other <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opm.gov\/retire\/index.aspx\">federal retirement and disability programs<\/a> provide benefits to federal civilian employees, members of the military, and veterans<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fsa.usda.gov\/FSA\/webapp?area=about&amp;subject=landing&amp;topic=sao-cc\">Commodity Credit Corporation<\/a> (Farm Subsidies)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/html\/uscode10\/usc_sup_01_10_10_A_20_II_30_56.html\">Medicare-Eligible Retiree Health Care Fund<\/a> (DoD health care plan)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">subsidy costs of <a href=\"http:\/\/studentaid.ed.gov\/PORTALSWebApp\/students\/english\/index.jsp\">federal student loan programs<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/wcb\/tapd\/universal_service\/\">Universal Service Fund<\/a> (which reduces the cost of telecommunications services for selected areas and individuals)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cms.gov\/home\/chip.asp\">Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.acf.hhs.gov\/programs\/ocs\/ssbg\/\">Social Services Block Grant<\/a> program<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Individually, each of these programs don&#8217;t amount to much, but combined they are very big <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/ftpdocs\/108xx\/doc10879\/MandatorySpending5-12-10.pdf\">(as this CBO\u00a0presentation\u00a0shows)<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been wondering what the &#8220;Other Mandatory Programs&#8221; are.
